Progress on WOODMER® Seal keeps moving forward. As part of the LIFE WOODMER project, co-funded by the EU LIFE Programme, our team has been refining the formulation of WOODMER® Seal, our bio-based heat seal coating designed to replace fossil-based coatings in flexible packaging. In the video, Lisa Höglund, Laboratory Engineer at Ecohelix, walks through what this second generation actually means in practice.
The updated formulation shows market-relevant properties, including good sealability, and has now been tested beyond the lab bench. To understand how close the product is to industrial readiness, it’s essential to validate it outside controlled conditions — so the team has run a series of pilot trials at industrial scale, with good results.
One key milestone: solving a storage stability issue that had affected earlier versions of the coating. By adjusting the formula, the team has taken WOODMER® Seal from the moment of coating to actual use with satisfactory properties throughout — a critical step for any material heading toward commercial application.
The team is also exploring different bio-based additives to further improve performance of our bio-based heat seal coating, while continuing to work closely with current customers to validate the coating in real applications.
It’s a hands-on reminder that behind every step toward market entry is careful, iterative lab work — and steady collaboration with the partners who will ultimately put WOODMER® Seal to use.
